Each and every one of us comes to a point in our life where we stop and think, “What am I doing with my life? Am I living my divine purpose? What’s important now and where do I go from here? have I fully developed my God-given talents and reached my highest levels of love, success, health, and wealth?” And, most importantly, “how can I fully enjoy the emotional benefits of knowing I touched the lives of others and leave a lasting legacy for my family to emulate?”
The natural tendency is to look around one’s own backyard for opportunities to help improve the lives of others. This is a noble and valid desire, but often we have more to offer or give. As our world continuously shrinks and the vast chasms between cultures and turbulent areas of the world are laid bare, so to are the needs of individuals. The current crisis within our global economy underscores the fragility of those that live at the very door of poverty and despair. Though our languages, cultures, and perspectives may be different, we are all living together on this planet and feel a strong kinship to our fellow human beings no matter their religious leanings or political systems.
Many people throughout the world today have time, talent, and resources on a scale to not only share with others around them, but to literally change the world. The lasting legacy of any person of wealth is to leave the world a better place for their having lived. This is possible by generously giving time and resources to effect change and improvement in the lives of individuals and communities around the globe.
With this idea in mind, we chose to profile some of the best-known philanthropists of the past in our Global Giving hall of fame. This elite group includes such humanitarian leaders as Andrew carnegie, Mahatma Gandhi, princess diana, and our 2008 Global Giving Award Winner, paul newman. We also want to honor those who are carrying on this great mission today. The Ambassadors of Global Giving showcases current leaders for whom philanthropy is a way of life. Their extraordinary efforts are changing the world we know and offering hope for a better tomorrow.
We also realize the importance of teaching the next generation the principles of giving through wealth and improving their world. To this end, we created “Alexander’s royal Journey”—a fantasy of discovery for one young man that teaches the most important aspects of philanthropy. This is a story for all ages and generations to share and pass on to others.
